Chapter 17

Of the rooms available to her, Sage chose one with a four-post canopy bed. She had always wanted one, but her mother had deemed them too childish to have. If she had had a choice in what room she could have grown up in, it would have been this one. The bed was enormous, with thick, plush pillows and silky sheets. Sheer curtains hung around the posts, shimmering as she ran her hand over them. The room was lit by what she first thought was electric bulbs, but upon remembering this world had no such thing, she inspected it further to find it was a source of energy. Magic.

The walls were off white with gold trimming, and the woodwork was light. It was spotless looking and reminded her of the French Countryside paintings her mother had in the library at home. The only thing was, the room had no windows. This further caused her to wonder if the inn was under some magical spell.

When she entered the bathroom, she was greeted by a large, clawed tub brimming with steaming water. Petals drifted lazily on the surface, their perfume mixing with the humid air. Sage gratefully sunk into the bath and soaked away the day of traveling. Afterwards she found a wardrobe that had nightgowns already in it. They smelled fresh, unused, so she picked one and slipped it on. Part of her wondered if the inn was just stocked well, another part suspected magic was at play.

She poked her head out of the room to see if the food had arrived. Two trolleys had been placed in the center of the room. She grabbed one and wheeled it to her room. Kade can have the other, she thought as she rolled it over to the sitting table her room had. For a Demon run Inn, this place is fantastic; she thought as she dug into the dishes. They were familiar and yet nothing like the food she had back home. She recognized some were meats, but where from she did not know.

After filling up on dinner, she sat by the fireplace she had and stared into the embers, thinking. She felt bad for leaving Naru and the others in the dark about what she was doing. She felt worse when she remembered the looks on their faces when they found out. Naru had been kind to her, and she had considered him a friend. She thought of the way he looked at her at the Springs and blushed. He will never look at me the same way, she thought bitterly. She understood their feelings towards her family, and Maidens, but she had not come here to cause trouble. She hadn’t even come here willingly.

She had to put the Hunters out of her mind for now. She needed to focus on getting back to Minx and not killing Kade.

The next morning, she awoke to the smell of breakfast. She rolled out of bed and into the common area to find Kade helping himself to a platter of meats and cheeses arranged on the table.
